This article presents the history of technical vocational education in the nineteenth century, linked to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (AIBA) and its contribution to the training of professionals who started to work in industries established in Brazil. The article begins by presenting the historical of the first half of the 19th century. Subsequently, it discusses the other institutions that proposed to teach professional courses, and mainly, report on the relevance of AIBA in the process of effective development of professional technical education in Brazil and its relationship with the teaching of artistic design. Thus, the objective is to reflect on the role of art education in this institution and, through a historical and bibliographic survey, investigate the association of artistic education, through drawing, with AIBA and how the institution contributed to the development the country's cultural background.
