Abstract

The work presents the results of a research that aimed at understanding how the representations of the working-man were produced, in its determining aspects of legitimizing a modernizing educational ideal, having in the periodic press the venue for propagating a work ideology in contrast to idleness and delinquency. The interest lies in the discourse of the press that puts itself as social intervenor and disseminated news on themes of idleness, delinquency and crime. The newspapers used as source circulated in Minas Gerais between 1892 and 1909. To sustain the analytical arguments, reference was made to the intersection of Political History, notably drawing from Serge Berstein, with the History of Education.
