This study analyzed the local ecological knowledge (LEK) of artisanal fishers in the Jaguaribe River (Ceará, Brazil), focusing on its relationship with the São Francisco River transposition. Grounded in ethnoecology and ethnoichthyology, the research explores how traditional knowledge interacts with hydrosocial transformations and contributes to conservation strategies. The objective was to understand how these knowledge systems influence fishers’ perceptions of ecological changes and their fishing practices. The study was applied and exploratory in nature, adopting a mixed-methods approach with semi-structured interviews conducted with 29 fishers between December 2021 and February 2022. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests, and k-means clustering. Results showed that LEK is predominantly shaped by practical experience, with an average of 4.3 native species cited per fisher and a positive correlation with fishing experience. There was partial overlap between recognized and caught species, and 90% of respondents expressed positive perceptions of the transposition, mainly related to increased river flow and the return of previously absent species, with no significant associations with sociodemographic variables. It is concluded that LEK provides valuable input for participatory conservation strategies, functioning as an adaptive system to regional hydrosocial changes.
