Abstract

Within the debate on the ethics of human genetic enhancement, the American author Michael Sandel stands out for arguing that this practice inflicts harm not on the targets of enhancement, but on a range of institutions and relationships valued in our society. In this sense, he states that the greatest risk of this technology lies in the threat it poses to the purpose of parenthood, sports, and even medicine. In this text, we intend to analyze the American author’s argument in order to discuss his main points and thus uncover his real impact on the debate concerning the ethics of human genetic enhancement.
