Abstract

The purpose of this article is to briefly explain the historical-philosophical foundations on which Arthur Schopenhauer built his philosophy, in other words, how Schopenhauer constituted his metaphysics of the Will. For this exposition, the path taken here will start from the understanding that Schopenhauer obtained from Eastern philosophical doctrines, specifically Buddhism and Hinduism, through the sacred books of the Hindus, the Upanishads, and Western philosophical thought. With reference to Western philosophy, it will be seen how the Frankfurt philosopher sought the philosophies of Plato and Immanuel Kant as a basis for formulating his thought, philosophers that Schopenhauer himself considered fundamental for the conception and understanding of his philosophical doctrine of the Will. In short, our aim here will be to show what influences Schopenhauer had on the construction of his philosophical thought.
