ABSTRACT: This study discusses the organization of violent territories in Mossoró/RN. As reference, we used bibliographic and field studies, as well as official data concerning the 2015-2019 period. We aimed to analyze how the organization and management of the territorial exclusion status contributes to the production and reproduction of urban violence. We observed that social exclusion leads to the organization of territories structurally abandoned by public authorities, which tend to be occupied by criminal gangs. These gangs take advantage of the state inertia and increase urban violence, transforming such territories in areas susceptible to crime. The study also verified that the way in which the media portrays criminal acts in these territories attributes a violent stigma to such areas.

ER -
